Important Message from Director – Docusign Forms

Hello, all.

We still have several families who have not submitted the required band participation forms, which will keep us from allowing those students from attending tonight’s game. If this applies to your family, please look at the steps below to solve this issue:

1. Ensure that the student has completed their signing. DocuSign will not auto-send the forms to the parents, who are the second signers, until the student has completed theirs.

2. If the prior step does not work for you, you can manually access the forms here, then sign, scan, and send back to me, even without the student’s signature; we can secure that in class today.

Thanks, everyone!

Jazz Class Offered

Hello, LH Band!
At the end of last semester, it did not seem likely that jazz band would be offered as a class during the school day during the 21-22 school year, and it also seemed likely that LH’s wonderful jazz director, Luke Wingfield, would not be returning. I am THRILLED to announce that Mr. Wingfield is on board to return for the 21-22 school year and we have the ability to offer jazz band as a class! The jazz class will be offered 8th period. To help us know if there will be sufficient enrollment to proceed with this plan, please reply to this email to let us know if you are interested. Also, know that we also will offer a 2nd jazz band that is outside of school only if you have an interest in playing in this genre but are not able to take the class.

Thanks, everyone, and please let me know if we can assist with anything.

Summer Band, Physicals, Private Lessons Info from Mr. Brumley

Hello, LH Band and Parents!

This email contains several important updates and reminders about Summer Band Camp, as well as a couple of other items of business. Please know that I am always eager to answer questions if any of this requires clarification.

Summer Band:

Summer Band activities get into full swing soon! Please see these Important Dates. These rehearsals are crucial to leading the LH Band to an amazing marching season, so please give this document a careful look. These are the same dates that have been on the calendar since last semester, just with a few more details filled in. This is where we will learn a huge portion of our competitive marching show and do initial assignment of marching spots, so attendance is highly important!

Physicals Required for Band Students:

While this was also mentioned beginning last semester, we know you all have LOTS going on, so this is a reminder to get your physical and be sure and have your doctor’s office use the prescribed UIL form, found here.  Once complete, please scan and email the form to me at reagan.brumley@risd.org. If you are more comfortable doing so, you can also arrange a time to drop off the hard copy to me at the band hall.

Private Lessons:

Private lessons are happening now and are back in-person! There is no quicker way to improve on your instrument than by way of private lessons, so if you haven’t already enrolled or if you need help getting set up with a teacher, we are here to make that happen. Email Mr. Singleton at aaron.singleton@risd.org to get set up.

I’ll be back in touch soon with details about how you can be preparing for Summer Band and what materials you’ll need. In the meantime, reach out anytime with your questions; we are here to help!

Thanks,

Reagan Brumley- Fine Arts Coordinator/Director of Bands

Summer Newsletter

Physicals – MANDATORY

EVERY member of the Wildcat Band will need to get a Physical completed prior to the start of camp on July 26!

The following form MUST be taken to your doctor and filled out by them during the exam: https://www.uiltexas.org/files/athletics/forms/PrePhysFormRvsd1_10_20.pdf

Students that have not turned in a completed physical form signed by a physician prior to the start of our season (they must have been cleared for participation by the physician as well) will not be able to participate in any band/guard activities until it is completed (passed) and turned in.

Physicals may be completed in a number of different ways – it’s totally up to each family!

Here are the options you have for completing your son/daughter’s physical…

1. Schedule an appointment with your family physician – cost determined by your insurance/physician.

2. Schedule an appointment at an urgent care clinic – cost is determined by your insurance/physician. CareNow is currently offering discounted $20 physicals. Find a location near you here: https://www.carenow.com/patient-services/medical-tests/sports-physical.dot

NEW from RISD: Updated COVID protocols for Summer Fine Arts Camps

Big picture

Check out our NEW Marching Band Tower!

Due to the creation of the HUB, our Practice Field had to move closer to Church Rd. This made it impossible to keep our old tower at its original location, so RISD was able to replace it!

We were fortunate enough to custom-design this just for the Wildcat Band!

Not only is it much taller, there are also 3 viewing levels, a roof, director stands and a beautiful new LH logo! This is one of the nicest Marching Band towers in all of DFW and we can’t wait to start using it! The location of the old tower was also paved over and will be used for secure outdoor Marching Band storage!

Message from new director

Dear Lake Highlands Band and Parents,

It is with tremendous excitement and a huge sense of duty to your legacy that I introduce myself to you as the new Director of Bands/Fine Arts Coordinator at Lake Highlands High School. Though I have taught band at various levels for 18 years, two of the most special years in my career were spent as an assistant band director at LH from 2006-2008. It was during that time that I learned what true excellence from high school musicians looks and sounds like, what your decades of rich tradition represents, and what a unique and wonderful place to raise kids the LH community is. In fact, that feeling was so strong that my wife and I moved into Lake Highlands five years ago and are now raising our own children here; they are all future Wildcats!

Outside of my family, there is nothing in my life that brings me greater joy than sharing my passion for music with students and using band as a vehicle to teach what it takes to commit to something greater than one’s self in the pursuit of excellence. I have been fortunate over the years to be able to share this pursuit with many students and see them realize the fruits of their labor. This has resulted in building the band program at my last school, Highland Park High School, into one that enjoyed high levels of competitive success at the state and national level. While those competitive successes were gratifying and are things that I am certain we will achieve together at LHHS, the biggest reward came from the individual relationships, student to student and teacher to student, and learning how much everyone was willing to invest in each other for the good of the group and how much more we all have in common than we have differences. Those relationships are the true rewards, and I truly can’t wait to form them with each one of you!

I’m also thrilled to tell you that we have hired our new assistant band director, Claire Pittman. Ms. Pittman is a 2010 graduate of Lake Highlands HS and was one of my students at LH from 2006-2008! She is a graduate of TCU and has spent the last five years teaching at Killian Middle School in the Hebron Cluster of Lewisville ISD, before which she taught at New Braunfels HS for two years.. In her time at Killian, the KMS Band has been the Texas State Honor Band (state championship) and performed at the acclaimed Midwest International Band and Orchestra Clinic in Chicago. Ms. Pittman also brings significant DCI experience as a performer and faculty member, so she will be a huge addition to our great staff with Mr. Singleton, Mr. Smit, and Mr. Martinez all returning!

I have already begun getting ready at the band hall and will be around all of next week and then again the week of July 5 through Summer Band. If you’d like to drop in and say “hi”, I’d love to meet you. I also am available if you’d like to work on anything on your instrument; just email me at reagan.brumley@risd.org and we’ll set it up! I am here to serve you starting NOW, and I can’t wait to embark on this journey with you. Please reach out anytime if I can be of assistance.

Thanks,

Reagan Brumley- Director of Bands/Fine Arts Coordinator

Early Morning arrival of Marching Band students on a Rehearsal day: All materials NOT needed for rehearsal must be placed in lockers (Brass/Color Guard), on your assigned spot in the Band Hall (Woodwinds) or spaced out in the entryway between the Band Hall and Percussion Room (Percussion).

All students will be released from morning rehearsals at 8:15am and will return to the Band Hall. Only F2F students will be allowed back in the building and locker rooms (1 at a time – please move quickly)

From there, students will be dismissed to Athletic Locker Rooms (H-Building: Boys and Girls PE Locker Rooms). If you are using the Athletic Locker Rooms, masks must be worn at all times unless showering. You will need to move quickly through the Locker Room as you’re getting ready for the day – no congregating! If you are not using the Athletic Locker Rooms, you may not walk through any part of the building unless you are heading to the Hub or Auditorium after 8:30am.

Once you are dressed for school, ONLY 1st period Band students will be allowed to remain in the Band Hall and must be on their assigned spot with all materials needed for class. Non 1st-period Band students will need to follow the School Entry plan and remain in the Auditorium or Hub after dressing.

Band Lockers are assigned and will be used only for band materials.
