We are proud to announce that our second band, the LHHS Symphonic Band, received 1st Division ratings from all six judges yesterday at the State UIL Concert and Sight Reading Evaluation. This is the highest rating that is awarded at UIL!
This year’s process was a learning experience for all involved – many students in this band did not perform at UIL in the last two years due to COVID-19 safety measures. That means that many of the students in this group last performed at UIL in junior high! As you can imagine, the state’s UIL expectations for junior high groups is very different than the state’s UIL expectations for high school groups.
It was a huge effort to get our musicians to the high level of individual ownership that they demonstrated on stage! We are very proud of our students for their efforts in improving their detail and musicianship all the way to their performance yesterday.
A few comments from the judges:
“Band, you produced relaxed, resonant characteristic sound in all instrument sections – BRAVO! Many terrific solos and solis!”
“It would be SO EASY in a band of this size to just ‘be’ in the section, but EVERY player in EVERY section contributed to the sound and energy of the performance.”
“What an incredible ending, so powerful but absolutely in control. WOW! I keep forgetting that this is a non-varsity band!”
We are hoping to have a recording to share with anyone interested in the next couple weeks. Thank you all for your support of the LHHS Band!
