LHABC Update, 10/22/18

Hi, Wildcat Band Families!

We’re all glad to be having a break from the rain, and so far this weekend is looking sunny for our Friday game against Pearce and our UIL Area performance on Saturday. If you haven’t already done so, please make sure to read Mr. Chavis’ update from yesterday, 10/21, regarding the changes in this week’s schedule, as well as a TENTATIVE timeline for UIL Area.

Some important info for the week ahead:

  • Tomorrow (Tuesday, 10/23): Our Concert Uniform moms are still in need of two more people to help transfer concert uniforms to the proper hangers and place them in garment bags. This is not a task that will work with students, so you do not have to be on the dedicated volunteer list to help. Please sign up here: https://www.signupgenius.com/go/20F0C4BAEA929A64-concert2
  • Wednesday, 10/24: Chick-fil-a Spirit Day fundraiser ALL DAY LONG at the NW Hwy/Skillman location! Go for breakfast, lunch, or dinner (OR ALL OF THE ABOVE) and tell them you’re there to support Lake Highlands Band.
  • Our Varsity Revue fundraiser was a HUGE success, raising just under $8,000! Many thanks to our VR Chairs, Lori Read and Kristin Roan, who headed up the fundraising aspects of this great event!
  • Friday, 10/26: Senior collage letters are DUE!! We can’t wait to see them in the band hall for Senior Week next week! Seniors, if you haven’t yet gotten your letter from Mr. Chavis’ office, please do so!
  • Wednesday rehearsal is from 2:30 to 5:30 after that day’s early dismissal (2:10). Make sure your kids have a snack to have before rehearsal!
  • We want YOU to be an LHABC Volunteer! Email me at a_daryani@att.net to add your name to our list. Background checks are required and can be done HERE: http://www.risd.org/group/community/VolunteerOpportunities.html

Thanks to all of you for your flexibility during this rainy marching season! The kids have definitely learned some resilience through this! And thanks for your continued support of LHABC!

Area This Week

Good afternoon and happy AREA week!

We won’t have the official Area performance schedule until tomorrow afternoon, but below is a TENTATIVE timeline for Saturday:

  • 6:00am – Rehearsal at LH
  • 6:45am – Snack/Breakfast in H-bldg Cafeteria
  • 7:30am – Dressed ready to load
  • Warmup and Performance should happen between 9:30 & 11am in Mesquite.
  • Lunch served after and then watch bands for the afternoon.
  • Finals announcement will occur around 5pm and the rest of the evening will be planned accordingly.

Due to some unavoidable conflicts, our rehearsal schedule is slightly altered this week:

  • Monday-Tuesday & Thursday-Friday are normal: 6:45-8:15am
  • WEDNESDAY 2:30-5:30pm (School dismisses at 2:10pm – bring a snack!)

Friday’s football game is AWAY vs. Pearce at Eagle-Mustang Stadium at 7:30pm.

A further detailed update will go out tomorrow about the end of the week once the Area schedule is released.

Thanks for your patience!

Levi Chavis

Happy UIL week!

Thank you all for your understanding last Friday as we (AGAIN) dealt with frustrating weather. There’s plenty of chances to get wet again this week as we look ahead on the forecast. So far this season we’ve had highly unpredictable weather – clear radar means rain, rainy radar means rain…we will just always plan for rain and be pleasantly surprised if it doesn’t! Please make sure you are prepared for rain during morning rehearsals – if it’s lightly raining with no heavy wind or lightning, we WILL practice!

ALL rehearsals this week will happen as scheduled regardless of weather unless you hear differently from us (via Remind/Charms). With all of the alternate plans being made, please make sure you have joined the Remind to stay connected: Text @lhband1819 to the number 81010. You can also check the LHABC website and Facebook groups regularly.

Honors Band essays are DUE TOMORROW!

The 9 weeks grading period ends FRIDAY! That means you must be passing ALL classes by Friday at 4pm. Anyone who is ineligible on Friday afternoon will miss the rest of our marching competition season AND football season.

UIL is this Wednesday! We perform at 6pm at Mesquite Memorial Stadium. Click here for the itinerary for Wednesday’s UIL contest once more for your reference.

If UIL is completely rained out, the alternate date is next Monday, October 22nd! PLEASE make sure that date is clear in case weather keeps us from performing on Wednesday.

Have a great week!

Levi Chavis

Marching Contest Cancelled

Unfortunately, the Denton marching contest for tomorrow has been cancelled. We would love to rehearse in the morning but the weather is not cooperating. Please use this time to recover and get well for the last few weeks of the season. Thank you for your flexibility and support tonight.

Go Band!

LHABC Update, 10/11/18

Happy October, Band Families!

We have a busy weekend ahead, which is pretty typical for October (you might hear the older band families using the term “Bandtober”), but your kids are SO well-equipped for everything they have on their schedules right now! That’s one of the many great things about band- your kids will learn time management skills, resilience, and how to work well with a team (these kids even help tutor each other!).

Here’s what’s coming up:

  • Tomorrow (10/12) is Junior High Night at the LH football game! Our band students from FMJH and LHJH will be here to have some fun with the high school band, and we will have parent volunteers from those schools helping serve meals and chaperone. Please welcome them and help them learn the ropes! Make sure to have your kids pack/wear cold weather layers for under their marching uniforms! Come early to see the band march the the show (with new parts added!) before the game! They will take the field at 7:05, so come cheer them on!
  • Saturday (10/13) we will compete in the Don Hanna Memorial Marching Contest, rain or shine (click here for details). The band will be fed lunch at LHHS @11:30 and dinner at C.H. Collins Stadium around 6.
  • LeaAnne Pillers needs to borrow six large (110 qt.) ice chests for the Don Hanna contest to transport food. Please email her if you can loan one: leaanne.pillers@risd.org
  • Wednesday (10/17) is UIL Region at Mesquite Memorial Stadium (details on attachment). Students will be dismissed from school early for this. Please join us at Mesquite Memorial to cheer them on if you are available!

SOS!! Our band is in need of a new chest freezer (21 cu.ft. or larger) AND a new fridge! Our freezer is much too small for our growing band, and our fridge is on it’s last legs. We would love to avoid purchasing new ones, so our hope is to put out the word to all of you to see if we can figure out a way to get gently used ones donated. Please contact Sherwin or me (contact info in the closing) if you have any ideas for replacing these.

We want YOU to be an LHABC Volunteer! Email me at a_daryani@att.net to add your name to our list. Background checks are required and can be done HERE: http://www.risd.org/group/community/VolunteerOpportunities.html

We so appreciate all of our band families who jump in and help with everything from uniforms, to chaperoning, to pit-popping (definitely a word), so THANK YOU!!! And thank you to our AMAZING board members who spend countless hours keeping it all running.

Band Weekly Update

The band did a phenomenal job handling all of the things thrown at them this past week. We made it to the 6 week progress report, through Homecoming, VR and our first contest of the season!

Despite some frustrating weather, our Wildcat Band put on an extremely solid performance at Midlothian on Saturday. We placed 5th in the Prelims round of the competition – great job!

This week:

Morning Rehearsals Monday-Thursday as usual.

We have some special guests joining us this week!

Tuesday: Mr. Michael McIntosh will be working with the full Marching Band in the stadium.

You can read more about Mr. McIntosh HERE: https://cavaliers.org/staff-bod/michael-mcintosh

Thursday – Mr. Jeff Bradford will be with us! He is the former Wildcat Band director and is currently our RISD Executive Director of Fine Arts.

THURSDAY is our game this week!  Start time is still 7:30pm (even though it’s a weeknight) and after-school looks the same as this past week: rehearse, eat, dress, march to stadium. We are the visiting team so we perform first at halftime and sit on the away side of the stands.

Friday: We have rehearsal 10am-Noon and then everyone gets to enjoy a 3-day weekend!

Thank you for your continued support – GO WILDCATS!
