LHABC Update, 9/24/18

Congratulations to our LH Drumline on their 3rd Place performance at the Plano Drumline Contest! They also earned “Best Snares” and “Best Front Ensemble” on Saturday. Our Jazz Band students also made a great showing at Jazz Region last week. The following students earned spots in the 2018 Region III All-Region Jazz Bands: Trent Fantini (also qualified for Area and will audition for State!), Leanne Yancey, Lexi Cooper, Sharice Locke, Drew Harris, and Dexter Sullivan. Make sure to congratulate our Drumline and Jazz students and directors when you see them!

This week will be BUSY, and we want to make sure everyone has all the info they need for it to be fun and successful:

  • Tim Johnson and Jim Newman would love more help with Pit Pops duties (no need to be a “Pop”, they’ll take any and all help offered!). Our marching show has become an even bigger production than past years, and we will be using ALL of our props and equipment this weekend, so extra help would be greatly appreciated!   • Varsity Revue is THIS WEEK and is one of our biggest fundraisers! Please join us Thursday at 7 pm and Saturday at 6 pm to watch all these talented students perform! Tickets available during lunches and at the performances. (See schedule below for student call times)
  • Chipotle Fundraiser is TONIGHT! 11613 N. Central (at Forest Ln.), suite 100; 5 pm-9 pm. Tell them you’re with the band or show them the flyer (look for it on our FB page!).
  • MUMS! If you bought a mum or armband, please pick it up 9/24 or 9/25 between 4:30 and 6:30 in the Orchestra Room.
  • HOCO Dressup Days are posted on the band calendar- students are encouraged to participate! https://lhabc.org/calendar/

  • As per Mr. Chavis’ 9/17 email, band students will need the following for their marching uniforms this Thursday (for VR), Friday and Saturday: gloves, black LH band athletic shorts, black LH band undershirt, LONG black socks (no logos) and marching shoes. NO JEWELRY OR MAKEUP! Hair MUST be up! Please read his email for complete details about the schedule on Friday afternoon.
    • VERY IMPORTANT: Band will get dressed in FULL uniform (no gauntlets, gloves, or shakos) in the Band Hall together since they have not yet worn the full uniform! It is important that they do this together to make sure they are all on the same page!
  • Marching Contest itineraries have been changed to reflect new times for Midlothian, PLEASE refer to Mr. Chavis’ email! Don’t forget the following for contests: full water jug, instrument, snacks for bus ride (there and back), black LH under uniform, long black socks (no logo!), marching shoes, PHONE CHARGERS ARE HELPFUL!

Varsity Revue

Varsity Revue is coming up! Don’t miss this long standing Lake Highlands Homecoming tradition! Performances are Thursday, September 27th and Saturday, September 29th. Tickets can be purchased during lunches the week of September 24th, before school on September 27th & 28th, and also at the door the nights of the performances.

Weekly Update – 9.17

Good afternoon,

Below is what is going on the next two weeks – we are excited about our first competition coming soon!

Morning rehearsals Monday-Friday 6:45-8:15am

Wednesday – school dismisses EARLY at 2:10pm – do homework J

JAZZ – All-Region Auditions begin promptly at 7pm on Wednesday at North Mesquite High School.  You are encouraged to carpool.

No game this week – Enjoy the weekend OFF!

The following week is VERY busy with Homecoming, Varsity Revue, Midlothian Marching Contest, etc:

  • VR Dress Rehearsals on Monday/Tuesday are ONLY for VR performers that auditioned – NO marching band required!
  • Wednesday – Marching Band call time is 4:30pm in the band hall
  • Thursday – VR performance: Marching Band call time is 8:00pm in under uniform: black athletic shorts, black shirt, long black socks, black shoes.  We will get dressed in FULL uniform (no gauntlets/gloves/shakos) in the Band Hall together since we haven’t worn the full uniform yet!  It is very important that we do this together and make sure we are all on the same page.
  • Friday – Homecoming Game day! We are wearing full uniform for the game: you need to have your gloves, black athletic shorts, black shirt, LONG black socks (no logos) and marching shoes.
    • 4:10pm School dismisses
    • 4:30pm Rehearsal in Stadium – wearing under uniform (black shirt/shorts/socks/shoes)
    • 5:15pm Eat in H-building cafeteria

Reminder: uniform rules apply – NO makeup or jewelry, hair must be up

  • Saturday – Midlothian Marching Contest!  All contest itineraries are attached to  e-mail sent on 9/17/18.

After the band performs in prelims, we will return to LH.  Due to VR performance and the Homecoming Dance the band will only be performing at prelims.

Hi, Band Families! Marching season is off and running (or, rather, off and marching), and by the looks of things the kids are going to look amazing once the whole show is complete with props (THANK YOU, PIT POPS!!) and full marching uniforms (THANK YOU, UNIFORM MOMS!)! We hope that all of you will support the band by attending the games and cheering on our kids and directors at halftime!

September and October are BUSY for the band, and we want everyone to feel ready to conquer and enjoy these next several weeks. This newsletter is a long one, but it’s packed with important information! Please take the time to read it all!

· PICKUP FOR MUMS AND ARMBANDS will be Monday, 9/24 and Tuesday 9/25 from 4:30-6:30 in the Orchestra Room. Please make arrangements to pick up yours those days OR contact Jennifer (see above) to make other arrangements

· WE RAISED $38,550 in our Snap Raise campaign and had 100% participation!! (THANK YOU, JENNIFER, FOR YOUR HARD WORK ON THIS!!) Great job, everyone, for your hard work in getting the word out! GO BAND!

· Chipotle Fundraiser Night for LHHS Band is Monday, 9/24 from 5-9 pm, 11613 N. Central Expy Ste. 100; digital or printout of attached flyer is required! We are not allowed to hand them out at Chipotle, so please bring yours with you.

· Varsity Revue chairs, Lori Read and Kristin Roan, would like to thank everyone who helped sell ads and all who contributed to band ad purchases! They are still taking Shout Out orders for the program (through 9/18) and for the performance (through 9/21), and those forms can be found here: https://lhabc.org/forms/

· Varsity Revue Tickets will be sold the week of 9/24 during lunches AND the nights of the performances at the door (9/27 and 9/29). Don’t miss the fun!

· Come cheer on our amazing DRUMLINE when they compete in the Plano Drumline Contest on Saturday, Sept. 22 at 5:30 p.m. at Clark Stadium in Plano. We want them to have a cheering section as LOUD as they are!

· Please check your closets for concert uniforms! Our Concert Uniform chairs are missing MANY jackets, pants, shirts, and dresses! We would love to see them back where they belong!

· This Friday’s pregame meal will be Subway! Thanks, LeaAnne Pillers, for keeping our kids and directors fed and happy!

Weekly Update

Good afternoon everyone,

Thank you for your support through a challenging day in the rain.  The band handled everything really well.  A BIG thanks to our awesome volunteers: meals, chaperones, pit pops and more!  We have a big week coming up!


Morning rehearsal/classes – Clinic with Mr. Morrison!  We are very excited to have him with us.  You can learn more about him here: http://www.reaganband.com/directors/dan-morrison/

Greatest Show passoff is now due on THURSDAY.  If you haven’t submitted Region recordings through Google Classroom, those are now LATE.


Undergraduate music education students from SMU will be observing our morning rehearsal – let’s show them a great one!


Morning rehearsals 6:45-8:15am

Friday’s game

Dress is summer uniform (same as today).  We are AWAY! This means we will not have rehearsal after school before leaving for Birdville.  Wear your shirt to school and rep the Wildcat Band!

  • 4:15 – Load large instruments on trucks/Food served at H-building Cafeteria
  • 5:15 – In arcs in Band Hall with everything needed for the game!
  • 5:30 – Load/Leave for Birdville

Due to the conditions of the field in Birdville, BOTH bands will be performing standstill only.  We are planning on performing as much of our show music as possible!

  • 7:30 – Kickoff
  • 10:00 – Load buses/depart for LH
  • 11:00 – Arrive at LH/unload buses and trucks

RAIN Update

Good evening,

There have been questions about the weather for tomorrow, so I wanted to shed some light on our protocol based on the weather we are dealing with.

Morning rehearsal: If it is raining, we will start in the Band Hall. Plan for rehearsing in clothes other than your summer uniform. The band will have plenty of time to change between rehearsal and loading the buses.

Game: If there is any lightning the game will be delayed. There must be 30 minutes of clear skies after a visible lightning strike. The amount of time we are delayed would dictate whether game is postponed or cancelled. Assuming there is no lightning, the game will continue. I am not aware of any specific protocol regarding how long they wait before cancelling if rain/lightning continues.

If there is rain: ALL band students will have a poncho to wear in the stands. Ponchos will be distributed before we leave tomorrow morning.

PLEASE do not plan on bringing your best instrument tomorrow! Bring whatever you consider your marching instrument. Woodwind instruments will stay in cases and either remain on buses or be stored under bleachers or in the concourse. If the rain is light, Brass/Drums will still play in the stands wearing ponchos.

The field is natural grass, so there could potentially be MUD!

Depending on how much rain, we would determine whether the field is safe for a performance. At the very least, we would perform for the Highlandettes (They have an alternate routine they may perform if the field is too slick).

It is hard to predict, but if rain is constant then we will not bring out the woodwinds, front ensemble or electronics for halftime. This will also prevent us from performing the show.

Band Weekly Update

Good afternoon and Happy Labor Day Weekend,

The band did a phenomenal job on Friday – at the pep rally, throughout the school day, FB game and halftime! We are VERY proud of their efforts this week leading up to our first game of the season.

  • Monday: (Labor Day) OFF! Enjoy the holiday
  • Tuesday: 6:15am Student Leadership meeting (Orchestra Room)
  • Tuesday-Friday: Morning rehearsals
  • Tuesday in classes: Fundamental Pass-off DUE. This can also be recorded over the long weekend if you prefer!
  • Friday: first round of Region recordings are DUE. These will be submitted through Google Classroom connected to each student’s band class. There are many ways to record/submit (Chromebook/Phone/Home computer). Use a metronome at whatever tempo you are currently practicing
  • Saturday: Game Day at the Cotton Bowl

Saturday Schedule: Eat something and drink water before arriving!

  • 6:45-7:30am – Marching rehearsal in the stadium. Arrive BY 6:30am just like a typical school day.
  • 7:30-8:15am – Food served in the H-building Cafeteria
  • 8:15am – Call time with EVERYTHING needed for the game (small instruments in cases, water bottle, flip folder). Dress will be the SAME as last week’s game – sunglasses/sunblock are encouraged!
  • 8:30am – Depart for Cotton Bowl
  • 9:00am – Arrive and unload
  • 9:30am – Enter the stands
  • 10:00am- Kickoff!
  • 12:30pm – Load and leave
  • 1:00pm – Arrive at LH
