LHABC Update, 8-29-18

Hi, Wildcat Band Families!

Our first halftime performance is THIS FRIDAY, and we would love to see loads of band parents and families cheering on the band! If you don’t already have a favorite spot to sit at the games, join other band parents in the section just north of the section the band sits in.

A few important things as we finish out this week:

  • Please read Mr. Chavis’ email from 8/26! It has SO MUCH important info, like what the kids need to wear Friday, pep rally info, getting ALL registration forms in to be eligible, etc.
  • MUMS!!! Orders MUST be placed by this Friday, 8/31. Look for order tables in BOTH buildings during lunches!
  • Our SNAP RAISE total is currently over $34,000 with seven days to go!! Keep it up! We hope to have 100\% of our students getting donations for maximum return, so please keep getting the word out!
  • VARSITY REVUE preparations are underway! Purchasing ads in the program is a big part of this fundraiser for the band, so please consider purchasing ad space for your student or business. Contact Lori Read with any questions (gwrlnr@flash.net)
  • Also, students– don’t forget to get VR audition applications turned in this week!
  • We are always accepting new volunteers and love to have new faces! Email me (a_daryani@att.net) if you’d like to be added to the list, and please visit http://www.risd.org/group/community/VolunteerOpportunities.html to do your required background check.
  • SPIRIT WEAR!! Look for Sarah McMenamin, our Spirit Wear chair, at all our home games! She’ll be set up near the north end of the home side of the stadium with all her great items! Cash/check/credit accepted!

Thanks to everyone who has been volunteering their time to get the school year off to such a great start- we appreciate you!

Weekly Update – week of 8/27

What a fantastic first week of school! The band is working extremely hard and we now have almost the full first 2 movements on the field.

If you missed Saturday’s rehearsal, it is expected that you come early tomorrow to get caught up on drill that was learned. It was a very productive rehearsal!

If all Band registration paperwork isn’t turned in by THURSDAY, you cannot attend the first game. If you have any question about forms, please contact Mr. Martinez.

Schedule for Friday:

  • Band practice 6:45-8:15am
  • Pep Rally begins at 9am for ALL band students
  • You need to wear your Adidas summer uniform shirt for the Pep Rally (choose your own shorts/pants) and then we want you to represent the band all day at school by keeping that shirt on! Normal procedure will be to wear your Adidas shirt on game day!
  • Black uniform shorts will be passed out Friday during classes to all new members and anyone who re-ordered new shorts.
  • Game dress: Summer uniform shirt, uniform shorts (provided – NOT athletic shorts like last week!), WHITE ankle socks and black marching shoes (NOT tennis shoes!) You must have a Flip folder for the game.
  • All band classes meet during the day on Pep Rally schedule.
  • After school – rehearsal 4:25-5:15in the stadium!
  • 5:30-6:15 – Dinner served in the H-building cafeteria
  • 6:15pm – Call time with everything needed for the game in Band Hall (summer uniform/flip folder/water)
  • Kickoff is 7:30pm! Game should be over around 10pm.

All WW/Brass band students now have an objective sheet for band and due dates start tomorrow. Please ask them to show you their objective sheet! The first thing due is Band Binder/Flip Folder/Instrument in working condition due TOMORROW.

The next few objectives include passing off the National Anthem (by Friday), a fundamental exercise (by 9/4) and the first Region music recordings on Google classroom (by 9/7). These are listed on the objective sheet as well as on the band calendar.

Varsity Revue forms are due this week!! We are still looking for Emcees to host the event. This is a great opportunity for band kids to help manage the entire show and be on stage. We are looking for 2-3 people to step up for this great opportunity!

After this week: You have Labor Day OFF – ENJOY!

THANK YOU to our awesome band parents for helping build props and sell merchandise on Saturday in the heat – we appreciate you.

Have a great week!

Levi Chavis

Varsity Revue!!

Hello fellow LHABC members! If you are new to our band program, we welcome you and hope that your band student is having a wonderful time, even without much sleep. We also apologize for bombarding you with SO much so quickly! Rest assured, this is NOT typical.

As you may already be aware, our Homecoming is incredibly early. With it also comes an LH tradition called Varsity Review TALENT SHOW, or VR as it is commonly referred. Click here to learn more about what VR is, that it is a major fundraiser for our band program, and how you can help volunteer in various ways. With performances for VR scheduled a little over one month away, September 27 and 29, we are feverishly working behind the scenes to have everything complete and need your help.

One of the ways you can help is to present local businesses and community with the opportunity to promote themselves, by placing an ad in this year’s VR program. This is explained in our solicitation and ad letter. If selling ads is not your thing and you know of someone or a business that would like to have an ad in the program, let us know and we’ll be happy to follow up with them. The deadline for ad graphics and payment is fast approaching, September 10. Please contact Lori Read at gwrlnr@flash.net if you are interested.

In addition and new this year, we are selling individual shout outs in the program, and also a small number of live shout outs during the actual performances, in order to increase our ad revenue. Deadline for program shoutouts is September 18, and Live Performance shoutouts is September 21.

Lastly, if your student or group of students is interested in auditioning with an act (anyone from the school is welcome and not only band students) for VR, pick up an audition form from Mr. Singleton in the band hall or click here. Forms must be returned to the folder outside the band hall no later than August 31 at 4:30pm, which is also approaching soon. Audition times will be posted after Labor Day on September 4.

Many thanks,

Lori Read and Kristin Roan

First week of school!

Good afternoon LH Band families,

Thank you all SO MUCH for your support of our kids at Friday night’s Parent Preview!  We enjoyed not only seeing our returning parents and former students but also meeting so many new families!

We are gearing up for our first week of school!  Here’s what you need to know going in to this week:

YES – we have marching rehearsal on Monday morning!  Rehearsal begins at 6:45 (NOT 7:00) so please plan to arrive BY 6:30am.  We do this so that we are done at 8:15 and the band has more time to get ready for school.

Every morning this week we will have 6:45-8:15am rehearsal.  It’s important that everyone is on time and prepared for rehearsal each day so that we can be efficient with our time.  Have your instrument, full water bottle and appropriate clothing and footwear for all rehearsals.

The only after-school event this week is the All Sports Pep Rally on Thursday night!  Call time is 5:30 ready to play in the band hall!  The band will be playing at the beginning of this event and then leaving by 6:30pm.  Please plan to pickup at the front circle drive due to the band lot being used as the site of the Pep Rally. Band students are also welcome to stay until the end (approx. 8pm) if they want to eat dinner provided by the Wildcat Club.

Dress is the same as last night’s parent performance: Red Summer Uniform shirt, black shorts, ankle socks and tennis shoes.

NO GAME this week: enjoy the Friday night off!

Saturday: FULL Marching rehearsal 7-11am

Due to school starting earlier for RISD than in years past (last Monday of August has been traditionally a universal start day), UIL has amended the 8-hour rule for school districts that start earlier than the last Monday of August until Labor Day.  Although we had the option to rehearse more and add weekend rehearsals the following two weeks, this Saturday is the ONLY additional rehearsal besides our regular mornings.  There is NO rehearsal the following Saturday or on Labor Day!

All band students (minus Color Guard) should have a flip folder to hold marching band music.  Mr. Singleton has them available for sale for only $5.

Please keep sharing our SNAP Raise website so that we can beat last year’s total!

Have a great first week,

Levi Chavis

Schedule Update – Thursday!

Good evening,

I apologize for the schedule change but we now have much more detailed information about Thursday’s events on campus and in order to accommodate new students attending Thursday’s Orientation, here is what our schedule will now look like:

7-11am Band pictures/rehearsal

For pictures, students need to have long black socks and a t-shirt to wear under their marching uniform (preferably black)

Girls – please no makeup or jewelry in uniform! This is a very important rule for the care and longevity of our uniforms. Hair needs to be UP for group picture but can be down for small group/individual pictures

4:30-7pm Stadium rehearsal

8pm Pep Rally – Drumline ONLY will be performing (same dress as tomorrow’s Convocation) – all others will be dismissed at 7pm

We hope that this will allow the band to have a productive stadium rehearsal but also help our 9th grade families get the information needed from the New Student Orientation.

Snow Cones
will now be served to students on Wednesday after our morning rehearsal due to today’s weather.

We look forward to seeing you tomorrow night after rehearsal at our parent meeting and on Friday for our parent preview performance in Wildcat-Ram Stadium! We will have even more exciting updates throughout the week as we prepare for school to start!

If their info conflicts with the online calendar, don’t hesitate to ask us- we’re always happy to answer your questions!

WOW!! Do we have a fun and busy week ahead… finish STRONG, Wildcat Band! Here is some important info to take you through this last week of Summer Band:

  • Our Snap Raise fundraiser is doing GREAT (over $16,000 in under a week- WOOHOO!), and we still have a few weeks to keep sharing with potential donors! If you haven’t spread the word, please do- you’d be surprised how many people are happy to donate, and every little bit adds up!
  • Share your student’s personal Snap page, or this one for the entire band: https://www.snap-raise.com/fundraisers/lake-highlands-band-2018
  • Homecoming is a month early this year, and that means that MUM SALES and VARSITY REVUE ad sales/audition applications are in the works NOW! Please refer to the email info that went out about those so you can be up to date about these important LHABC fundraisers! Please use this link to sign up to help with Mums: https://www.signupgenius.com/go/30e0f44aeaa2d6-mumtable
  • If you have a SENIOR BAND STUDENT and you didn’t attend registration, please contact Wendy Waggoner, our lead Senior Parents chair for LHABC so your band student can reserve a letter (she’ll tell you what that means!)… and make sure to attend the Senior Parent Meeting this Friday at 6 pm!
  • TUESDAY, 8/14 we have two important meetings in our band hall:
    • BOARD MEETING, 6 PM in the Orchestra Room
    • MANDATORY GENERAL MEETING, 7 PM in the Band Hall- we hope everyone can attend!
  • Please make sure your band student has BLACK ANKLE SOCKS before school starts- no logos, please. This is required during the first several, hot weather games, when students will march in their summer uniform.
  • Does your band student have FOOD ALLERGIES??? Please email that info to LeaAnne Pillers, our LHABC Meals chair. She needs to know about any arrangements she needs to make as she plans to feed our kiddos this year!
  • Have you registered to be a volunteer? RISD has a new system for doing background checks, so please use this link to register so you are able to volunteer with LHABC: http://www.risd.org/group/community/VolunteerOpportunities.html
  • Speaking of volunteer opportunities- please be on the lookout for upcoming info listing our signups for various events. We will send links via email, our Facebook page, and Remind
  • And speaking of Remind– parents and students should sign up to BOTH of these for updates from LHABC and our Band Directors:
    • LHABC: text @k7efa8 to 81010
    • Band Directors: text @lhband1819 to 81010

We CANNOT wait to see the Parent Preview performance- it’s always so impressive to see what our kids are learning, and if your family is new to Marching Band, prepare to be amazed by how many new skills have been packed into these few weeks of Summer Band! All of this hard work (and we know it’s hard… those days are long and hot) truly does pay off.

As always, we welcome your questions, so please reach out if there is anything we can help with!

Aug. Newsletter

Hi Wildcat Band Families!

Whew!! What a whirlwind this first full week of summer band is! We hope everyone is beginning to get in the swing of the schedule- those early mornings can feel brutal at first, but we promise it’s worth it (seriously- you’re gonna be SO impressed with the music and marching your kids are learning!).

An August newsletter is forthcoming, but here are a few important bits of info as we head into week two of summer band:

• Everyone should have received an important email from Mr. Chavis about our SNAP Raise fundraiser that is kicking off. Please read that email thoroughly and ask your kids about the form they need to fill out.

• Please mark your calendars for band registration on Saturday, Aug. 11 from 10-2 (detailed info coming soon!).

Volunteer opportunities:

Early next week you will get an email from Mr. Chavis that will include important info and forms for registration, so be on the lookout for that. Additionally, we will send out a registration 411 email so that everyone has all the details they’ll need heading into registration.

As always, please don’t hesitate to reach out if you have any questions! We know that these first weeks of marching band can be hectic, and we want to make sure that everyone feels in-the-know! Our website is a great source of info as well, you can find past newsletters, our up-to-date calendar, forms, etc.
